How to choose
Look for a gel or light foaming cleanser labelled for oily or combination skin. Salicylic acid (BHA, around 0.5 to 2%) helps clear oil inside pores and suits blackheads and clogged pores. Niacinamide and zinc in a wash are gentle additions. Avoid heavy soaps with a high pH and strong alcohol if your skin feels tight afterwards; tightness means the barrier is being stripped. Fragrance and menthol give a cooling feel but can irritate. Wash twice a day: once in the morning, once at night, plus after heavy sweating. If you wear sunscreen or makeup, wash it off properly at night. Pair the cleanser with a light moisturiser, since oily skin still needs water.
Who really needs this
Oily and combination skin, shiny T-zone by noon, visible pores or blackheads, and anyone who commutes in heat and dust. If you have inflamed, painful acne, or breakouts that scar, see our acne face wash guide and a dermatologist, since a cleanser alone will not control them. Very sensitive or eczema-prone skin should skip actives like salicylic acid and use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
