Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Acnestal 5.5 Soap contains Salicylic Acid 5.5% w/w (medicated soap). It belongs to the Keratolytic / Beta-hydroxy acid (Salicylic acid) class of medicines.
Salicylic acid is a keratolytic (beta-hydroxy acid) that loosens and removes dead skin cells and excess oil from pores. This helps unclog pores, reduce comedones, and improve acne lesions over time.
For external use only. Wet skin, apply the soap and lather gently over affected areas for 20–60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Use once daily initially; may increase to twice daily if tolerated. Avoid eyes, lips and broken/irritated skin; use a light non-comedogenic moisturizer if dryness occurs.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Acnestal as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Acnestal than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Acnestal are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
| Pregnancy | Consult doctor (topical salicylic acid generally low absorption, but avoid prolonged/large-area use) |
|---|---|
| Alcohol | No known interaction (topical); avoid harsh alcohol-based skincare that may increase dryness/irritation |
| Habit forming | No |
Stop use and consult a doctor if severe irritation, swelling, blistering or allergy occurs. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes; rinse with plenty of water if contact occurs. Use with caution on sensitive skin, eczema, or very dry skin. Do not use on large areas or under occlusion unless advised by a clinician. If you are allergic to salicylates (aspirin), consult a doctor before use. Keep out of reach of children.
May increase irritation when used with other topical acne agents or exfoliants (benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin/adapalene, other AHAs/BHAs, alcohol-based toners, abrasive scrubs).
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep soap in a dry soap dish between uses.
