Composition of Allegra D Tablet

Allegra D Tablet contains Fexofenadine (60mg) + Pseudoephedrine (120mg). It belongs to the Second-generation H1 antihistamine + Sympathomimetic nasal decongestant class of medicines.

How Allegra D Tablet works

Fexofenadine is a non-sedating antihistamine that blocks H1 receptors to reduce allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching and watery eyes. Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic decongestant that constricts blood vessels in the nasal passages to reduce swelling and congestion.

How to take Allegra D Tablet

Take as directed by a doctor. Usually taken orally with water; can be taken with or without food. Avoid taking with fruit juices (e.g., apple/orange/grapefruit) as they may reduce fexofenadine absorption. Do not crush or chew if the tablet is modified/extended release.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe drowsiness, a fast heartbeat, confusion and, in children, agitation and fits. It can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Allegra D Tablet

Most side effects of Allegra D are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• dry mouth
• insomnia
• restlessness
• palpitations
• increased heart rate
• anxiety

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Safety advice for Allegra D Tablet

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in hypertension, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention, and kidney impairment. May cause insomnia, nervousness or palpitations; avoid late-evening dosing if it affects sleep. Do not use with other decongestants or stimulant-containing cold medicines without advice. Seek medical help for chest pain, severe headache, significant rise in BP, or allergic reaction.

Do not take Allegra D if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. The sedating antihistamines are not suitable for very young children, or for people with glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, without medical advice. Codeine-containing preparations are not for children, or for anyone with breathing difficulty.

Interactions with other medicines

MAO inhibitors (contraindicated/avoid), other sympathomimetics/decongestants, tricyclic antidepressants, linezolid, beta-blockers and other antihypertensives (may reduce effect), antacids containing aluminium/magnesium (reduce fexofenadine absorption; separate by 2 hours), erythromycin/ketoconazole (may increase fexofenadine levels), fruit juices (reduce fexofenadine absorption)

Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Allegra D Tablet

Taking it at bedtime reduces the impact of any drowsiness. Identify and avoid your triggers where you can — dust, pollen, cold air. Drink plenty of water — it thins mucus better than any syrup. Steam inhalation helps congestion and costs nothing. Measure the dose with the cup supplied.
