Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated October 2026
Cefilix-Az Tablet contains Cefixime (200mg) + Azithromycin (250mg) + Lactic Acid Bacillus (60 million spores). It belongs to the Cephalosporin, Macrolide and Gut protective / probiotic class of medicines.
This medicine combines 3 active ingredients: Cefixime, Azithromycin and Lactobacillus. Cefixime kills the bacteria causing your infection by destroying the cell wall that holds them together. Azithromycin stops the bacteria causing your infection from making the proteins they need to multiply. Lactobacillus supports the lining and the natural bacteria of the gut, helping digestion settle back to normal.
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush or break it unless your doctor has told you to. Take it with or just after food. Taking it at about the same time each day helps you remember. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.
An overdose of this medicine can cause vomiting, severe loose motions and, rarely, fits. It can cause vomiting, hearing disturbance and heart rhythm changes. It may cause bloating and loose motions. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.
Most side effects of Cefilix-Az are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:
Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
Finish the whole course even after you feel better — stopping early breeds resistant bacteria. Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe reaction to penicillin; a small proportion of people react to both groups. Report severe or watery loose motions during or after the course rather than treating them yourself. Several medicines in this group are on Schedule H1 precisely because overuse drives antibiotic resistance. Take it only when a doctor has prescribed it for you. Finish the whole course even after you feel better. Tell your doctor if you have a heart rhythm problem or take a medicine for one — this group can affect the heart's electrical timing. Loose motions with high fever, blood in the stool or severe abdominal pain need a doctor, not a home remedy. Oral rehydration salts and fluids matter more than any medicine when you have loose motions — dehydration is the real danger, especially in children and older people. Take a probiotic a couple of hours apart from an antibiotic so the antibiotic does not simply kill it. Do not use an anti-motility medicine such as loperamide if you have a fever or blood in the stool.
Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for anyone with a known allergy to cephalosporin antibiotics. Not for anyone with a known allergy to macrolide antibiotics, or with certain heart rhythm disorders. Probiotics are used with caution in people whose immune system is significantly suppressed.
Antacids, iron and zinc reduce absorption — separate them by a couple of hours. Tell your doctor if you take a blood thinner. Interacts with a long list of medicines, including statins, some heart medicines and blood thinners — tell your doctor everything you take. Antacids reduce absorption; separate them by a couple of hours. Antibiotics reduce the effect of probiotics taken at the same time.
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Some probiotic preparations ask to be refrigerated — follow the pack. Keep out of the reach of children.
