Composition of Extralube Eye Gel

Extralube Eye Gel contains Carboxymethylcellulose. It belongs to the Eye drops class of medicines.

Uses of Extralube Eye Gel

  • Eye infection
  • Eye inflammation
  • Dry eyes
  • Glaucoma
  • Allergic conjunctivitis

Benefits of Extralube Eye Gel

In Eye infection
Extralube clears the bacteria causing a red, sticky, painful eye, so the discharge, grittiness and redness settle within days.
In Eye inflammation
Extralube calms inflammation inside or on the surface of the eye, relieving redness, pain and sensitivity to light.
In Dry eyes
Extralube lubricates the surface of the eye, relieving the gritty, burning, tired feeling of dry eyes, especially after screen use or in air-conditioning.
In Glaucoma
Extralube lowers the pressure inside the eye, which is what protects the optic nerve from the slow, painless damage glaucoma causes to sight.
In Allergic conjunctivitis
Extralube relieves the itching, watering and redness of an allergic eye, so you can stop rubbing and the eye can settle.

How Extralube Eye Gel works

Carboxymethylcellulose acts directly on the surface and inside of the eye where it is instilled.

How to take Extralube Eye Gel

Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer and rub it in gently. Wash your hands before and after use, unless your hands are the area being treated. This is for use on the skin only — do not swallow it. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed one — applying extra does not make up for it.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine is unlikely from eye use; flush the eye with clean water if too much is instilled. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Extralube Eye Gel

Most side effects of Extralube are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:

  • Stinging on instillation
  • Blurred vision for a few minutes
  • Watering
  • Redness
  • Bitter taste

Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Never let the dropper tip touch your eye, eyelid or fingers — that is how a bottle becomes contaminated and causes a worse infection. Discard the bottle one month after you first open it, even if drops remain. Remove soft contact lenses before instilling drops and wait fifteen minutes before putting them back, unless the drops are specifically made for use with lenses. Seek same-day care for eye pain, marked redness, sensitivity to light or any loss of vision. Steroid eye drops must only be used under medical supervision — used wrongly they can raise eye pressure and damage sight. Glaucoma drops must be used every day for life; there are no symptoms until sight is already lost.

Do not take Extralube if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for anyone with a known allergy to the preservative in the preparation.

Interactions with other medicines

Beta blocker eye drops can be absorbed enough to slow the heart and tighten the airways — tell your doctor if you have asthma or a heart condition.

How to store Extralube Eye Gel

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Close the cap tightly after each use. Keep out of the reach of children.

Quick tips for Extralube Eye Gel

  • Press gently on the inner corner of the eye for a minute after instilling.
  • This keeps the drop in the eye and reduces the bitter taste.
  • Leave five minutes between two different drops.
  • Never share eye drops with anyone.
