Composition of Fusiwal Ointment

Fusiwal Ointment contains Fusidic Acid. It belongs to the Topical antibacterial class of medicines.

Uses of Fusiwal Ointment

  • Skin infection
  • Infected wounds
  • Impetigo
  • Boils

Benefits of Fusiwal Ointment

In Skin infection
Fusiwal kills the bacteria infecting the skin, so the redness, swelling, pain and discharge settle and the skin heals.
In Infected wounds
Fusiwal clears infection from a cut, graze or wound so it can heal cleanly, and helps prevent infection in a wound at risk.
In Impetigo
Fusiwal clears the crusted, weeping sores of impetigo and stops them spreading to other areas or to other people.
In Boils
Fusiwal treats the bacterial infection in a boil or folliculitis, reducing the pain and swelling and helping it heal.

How Fusiwal Ointment works

Fusidic Acid kills the bacteria infecting the skin at the place it is applied.

How to take Fusiwal Ointment

Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer and rub it in gently. Wash your hands before and after use, unless your hands are the area being treated. This is for use on the skin only — do not swallow it. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed one — applying extra does not make up for it.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine is unlikely from skin use. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Fusiwal Ointment

Most side effects of Fusiwal are mild and settle as the body gets used to the medicine. The ones reported most often are:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Dryness

Stop the medicine and get help at once for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Use it for the short course prescribed, usually about a week. Prolonged use of a topical antibiotic breeds resistant bacteria. See a doctor if the area becomes more red, swollen, painful or spreads, or if you develop a fever — a spreading skin infection needs tablets. Clean the area gently before each application. Do not use it on large raw areas or burns unless your doctor has said to.

Do not take Fusiwal if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for use in or around the eyes.

Interactions with other medicines

No significant interactions are expected from preparations used on the skin.

How to store Fusiwal Ointment

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Close the cap tightly after each use. Keep out of the reach of children.

Quick tips for Fusiwal Ointment

  • Wash your hands before and after applying, and cover the area if advised.
  • Do not share towels or bedding while an infection is active.
