Composition of Maxtra Syrup

Maxtra Syrup contains Chlorpheniramine Maleate (2mg/5ml) + Phenylephrine (5mg/5ml). It belongs to the Paracetamol (analgesic/antipyretic) + H1 antihistamine (chlorpheniramine) + alpha-adrenergic agonist decongestant (phenylephrine) class of medicines.

How Maxtra Syrup works

Paracetamol reduces fever and relieves pain by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the brain. Phenylephrine is a nasal decongestant that constricts blood vessels in the nasal mucosa to reduce blockage. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine that decreases sneezing, watery eyes and runny nose by blocking H1 receptors.

How to take Maxtra Syrup

Oral syrup. Shake well before use and measure with a dosing cup/spoon. Take as prescribed by a doctor; can be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Do not exceed the recommended dose or use multiple paracetamol-containing products together.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If your child missed a dose of Maxtra Syrup, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give a double dose to make up for the missed one.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe drowsiness, a fast heartbeat, confusion and, in children, agitation and fits. It can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Maxtra Syrup

Most side effects of Maxtra are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• constipation
• stomach upset
• headache
• nervousness
• palpitations

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Safety advice for Maxtra Syrup

Warnings and precautions

May cause sleepiness—avoid driving/operating machinery. Do not exceed total daily paracetamol dose; overdose can cause severe liver damage. Use with caution in liver disease, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, glaucoma, enlarged prostate/urinary retention. Not recommended with MAO inhibitors (or within 14 days of stopping). Seek medical advice if symptoms persist >3 days, high fever, breathing difficulty, rash, or severe sore throat. Children: use only on medical advice and per weight/age-appropriate dosing.

Do not take Maxtra if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. The sedating antihistamines are not suitable for very young children, or for people with glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, without medical advice. Codeine-containing preparations are not for children, or for anyone with breathing difficulty.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol (increases liver risk and drowsiness), other paracetamol-containing medicines, sedatives/sleeping pills/opioids (additive drowsiness), MAO inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine, selegiline), tricyclic antidepressants, beta-blockers and other antihypertensives, sympathomimetics/decongestants, warfarin (prolonged regular paracetamol may increase INR)

How to store Maxtra Syrup

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from light. Do not freeze. Keep bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.

Maxtra Syrup is commonly prescribed to relieve symptoms of cold and allergy such as runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes in children. Give this medicine exactly as advised by your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Maxtra Syrup may cause slight drowsiness or irritability in some children. Monitor your child after giving the dose. This medicine should not be given to children below 4 years of age. Inform your doctor if your child has any existing medical conditions or is taking any other medications.
