Naproxen 10% w/w (topical gel)
Naprosyn Gel + is used for relief of pain and inflammation in musculoskeletal conditions such as sprains, strains, sports injuries, tendonitis, back/neck pain, and localized arthritis-related pain.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Naprosyn Gel + contains Naproxen 10% w/w (topical gel). It belongs to the NSAID (Propionic acid derivative) class of medicines.
Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). When applied to the skin, it reduces the formation of prostaglandins at the site of application, thereby decreasing pain, swelling, and inflammation with minimal systemic absorption compared to oral NSAIDs.
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and gently rub in 2-3 times daily or as directed by a physician. Wash hands after use. Avoid application on broken/irritated skin, near eyes/mouth, and avoid occlusive dressings unless advised.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Naprosyn as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Naprosyn than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Naprosyn are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
| Pregnancy | Use with caution (avoid in 3rd trimester; consult doctor) |
|---|---|
| Alcohol | No known interaction (topical); use caution if also taking oral NSAIDs |
| Habit forming | No |
Do not use if allergic to naproxen/other NSAIDs (or history of aspirin-induced asthma/urticaria). Avoid use on open wounds, infected or eczematous skin. Stop and seek medical advice if severe skin reaction, worsening pain/swelling, or signs of allergy occur. Use with caution in pregnancy (especially third trimester) and in patients with active peptic ulcer/bleeding disorders if large areas are treated for long durations. Avoid excessive sunlight/UV exposure on treated area if rash occurs.
Additive NSAID effects if used along with oral NSAIDs/aspirin; increased bleeding risk with anticoagulants/antiplatelets (theoretical with extensive use); caution with other topical irritants/keratolytics on same area
Store below 25°C, tightly closed. Protect from heat and direct light. Keep out of reach of children.
