Same salt, different brand — what does that mean?

A substitute contains the same active ingredient (salt), in the same strength, as Nolatoux Syrup. The medicine inside is the same — the brand name, manufacturer and price are what differ.

All medicines sold in India, branded or generic, must meet the quality standards set by the national drug regulator (CDSCO). A lower price does not mean lower quality.

Please confirm with your doctor or pharmacist before switching brands — they will check that the strength and form match your prescription.

Composition of Nolatoux Syrup

Nolatoux Syrup contains Chlorpheniramine Maleate (2mg/5ml) + Phenylephrine (5mg/5ml). It belongs to the Antihistamine / leukotriene antagonist and Expectorant / mucolytic / bronchodilator class of medicines.

Uses of Nolatoux Syrup

Treatment of Common cold

Key benefits

  • In Treatment of Common cold Nolatoux Syrup effectively relieves symptoms associated with common cold in children
  • such as blocked nose
  • runny nose
  • watery eyes
  • and sneezing. It helps loosen thick mucus
  • making it easier to cough out. It also shrinks the blood vessels and provides rapid relief that lasts for several hours. These actions make breathing easier. Nolatoux Syrup usually starts working within a few minutes
  • and the effects can last up to several hours.

How Nolatoux Syrup works

Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an antiallergic that helps relieve symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that works by narrowing the small blood vessels in the nasal passages, thereby relieving nasal congestion and stuffiness.

How to take Nolatoux Syrup

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Nolatoux Syrup may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If your child missed a dose of Nolatoux Syrup, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give a double dose to make up for the missed one.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe drowsiness, a fast heartbeat, confusion and, in children, agitation and fits. It can cause vomiting, severe drowsiness, a racing heart and, with codeine, dangerously slow breathing. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Nolatoux Syrup

Most side effects of Nolatoux are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

  • Most side effects do not require any medical attention and disappear as your body adjusts to the medicine. Consult your doctor if they persist or if you’re worried about them

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Older antihistamines cause marked drowsiness — do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this affects you. Tell your doctor promptly about any change in mood, sleep, agitation or unusual thoughts while taking montelukast; this is uncommon but recognised. This relieves the symptoms of an allergy; it does not treat the cause, and it is not a treatment for an acute asthma attack. Seek emergency care for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing. See a doctor if a cough lasts more than a week, or comes with fever, breathlessness, chest pain or blood in the sputum. Do not give cough and cold preparations to young children except on a doctor's advice. Do not combine two cough preparations — they frequently contain the same ingredients, and the doses add up. Preparations containing codeine can cause dependence and must be used only for the period your doctor specifies.

Do not take Nolatoux if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. The sedating antihistamines are not suitable for very young children, or for people with glaucoma or an enlarged prostate, without medical advice. Codeine-containing preparations are not for children, or for anyone with breathing difficulty.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol, sleeping tablets and other sedating medicines add to the drowsiness. Tell your doctor about all cold and cough preparations — many already contain an antihistamine. Sedating ingredients add to the effect of alcohol and sleeping tablets. Decongestants such as phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure — tell your doctor if you are hypertensive.

How to store Nolatoux Syrup

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Once opened, use it within the period printed on the pack. Keep out of the reach of children.

Expert advice for Nolatoux Syrup

Nolatoux Syrup is commonly prescribed to relieve symptoms of cold and allergy such as runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes in children. Give this medicine exactly as advised by your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Nolatoux Syrup may cause slight drowsiness or irritability in some children. Monitor your child after giving the dose. This medicine should not be given to children below 4 years of age. Inform your doctor if your child has any existing medical conditions or is taking any other medications.
