How Novalgin Nu works

Novalgin NU Tablet is a combination of two medicines: Caffeine and Paracetamol/Acetaminophen. Caffeine narrows the blood vessels in the brain to reduce headache. Paracetamol/Acetaminophen is an analgesic (pain reliever) which works by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers that cause pain. Together, they relieve headache effectively.

How to take Novalgin Nu

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Swallow it as a whole. Do not chew, crush or break it. Novalgin NU Tablet may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.<br>Avoid Novalgin NU Tablet with caffeine and chocolate as well as food containing caffeine and chocolate such as tea leaves, cocoa beans.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine can cause severe and sometimes fatal liver damage, often with no symptoms at all for the first day. It can cause a racing heart, tremor, vomiting and agitation. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Most side effects of Novalgin Nu are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Warnings and precautions

Never exceed the daily maximum printed on the pack. Paracetamol overdose damages the liver, and the damage can be silent for a day or two before it becomes serious. Check every other medicine you are taking. Paracetamol is in a very large number of cold, flu and pain combinations, and the doses add together. If you drink alcohol regularly, or have liver disease, ask your doctor what daily limit is safe for you. See a doctor if fever lasts more than three days, or pain more than five. Count your tea, coffee and cola for the day — the caffeine in this medicine adds to them. Taken late in the day it can keep you awake. Painkillers with caffeine taken most days can themselves cause a daily headache. If you are reaching for them more than twice a week, see a doctor rather than taking more.

Do not take Novalgin Nu if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with severe liver disease, except under medical supervision. Not for anyone with an uncontrolled heart rhythm problem, unless a doctor has said otherwise.

Interactions with other medicines

Regular alcohol use increases the risk of liver injury. Tell your doctor if you are on warfarin — regular high-dose paracetamol can affect it. Tell your doctor if you take medicines for asthma, a heart rhythm problem, or an antibiotic of the ciprofloxacin family — caffeine lasts longer alongside some of them.

Store below 30°C in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Expert advice for Novalgin Nu

Take the lowest dose that works, and leave the stated gap between doses. Seek help immediately after a suspected overdose, even if you feel completely well — treatment works best when it is early. Avoid taking it in the evening if it disturbs your sleep. Cutting down suddenly after taking it daily can itself cause a headache for a day or two.
