How Parafiren Syrup works

Parafiren Peppermint Suspension is a combination of three laxatives: Sodium picosulfate, liquid paraffin and milk of magnesia, which relieves constipation. Sodium picosulfate is a stimulant laxative which increases peristalsis (the wave-like movement of the intestines) to push the stools forward. Liquid paraffin is a lubricant laxative which helps retain water and fat in the stools, while milk of magnesia is an osmotic laxative which works by drawing water into the intestine through osmosis, making the stools soft. Together, they make stools easier to pass.

How to take Parafiren Syrup

Take this medicine in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Measure it with a measuring cup and take it by mouth. Shake well before use. Gudlax-Plus Laxative Peppermint Sugar Free may be taken with or without food, but it is better to take it at a fixed time.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

Warnings and precautions

Drink plenty of water while taking any laxative, particularly the fibre-based ones — without it they can make constipation worse. Do not use stimulant laxatives daily over long periods without medical advice; the bowel becomes reliant on them. See a doctor if constipation is new and persistent in an adult over forty, or comes with blood, weight loss or severe pain. This is for short-term relief. See a doctor if you need it most days for more than a couple of weeks. Seek urgent care for chest pain that spreads to the arm or jaw, comes with sweating or breathlessness — do not assume it is acidity. Antacids interfere with the absorption of many other medicines. Take them at least two hours apart from anything else.

Do not take Parafiren if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for anyone with a suspected bowel obstruction, or with severe abdominal pain of unknown cause. Magnesium-containing antacids are avoided in significant kidney disease.

Interactions with other medicines

Laxatives can reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time. Reduces the absorption of thyroid tablets, iron, and several antibiotics — separate them by at least two hours.

How to store Parafiren Syrup

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Once opened, use it within the period printed on the pack. Keep out of the reach of children.
