Composition of Salazar DS Tablet

Salazar DS Tablet contains Sulfasalazine (1000mg). It belongs to the Aminosalicylate + Sulfonamide (Sulfasalazine) class of medicines.

How Salazar DS Tablet works

Sulfasalazine reaches the colon where gut bacteria split it into 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and sulfapyridine. 5-ASA reduces intestinal inflammation, while sulfapyridine contributes to immunomodulatory/anti-inflammatory effects useful in rheumatoid arthritis.

How to take Salazar DS Tablet

Take as prescribed, usually after food with plenty of water. Swallow the delayed-release tablet whole; do not crush or chew. Maintain adequate hydration and follow the dosing schedule regularly.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Salazar DS Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine may cause bloating and loose motions. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Salazar DS Tablet

Most side effects of Salazar DS are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

• Nausea
• vomiting
• abdominal pain
• loss of appetite
• headache
• dizziness
• rash
• fever
• orange/yellow discoloration of urine/skin
• reversible low sperm count

Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Warnings and precautions

Use with caution in patients with sulfonamide or salicylate allergy, G6PD deficiency, asthma, liver or kidney impairment, or blood disorders. May cause serious skin reactions, hepatitis, pancreatitis, and blood dyscrasias; seek care for rash, sore throat, fever, unusual bruising/bleeding, jaundice, or severe abdominal pain. Periodic CBC and liver function monitoring is recommended. May reduce folate levels—supplement if advised. Ensure good hydration to reduce risk of kidney stones.

Do not take Salazar DS if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Probiotics are used with caution in people whose immune system is significantly suppressed.

Interactions with other medicines

Methotrexate (increased toxicity risk), warfarin/anticoagulants (bleeding risk/INR changes), azathioprine/6-mercaptopurine (myelosuppression risk), digoxin (reduced absorption), folic acid (reduced levels), antibiotics altering gut flora (may reduce effect), antidiabetic medicines (may increase hypoglycaemia risk)

Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.

Expert advice for Salazar DS Tablet

Salazar DS Tablet may take 6-8 weeks to show effects. Continue taking it as prescribed. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Salazar DS Tablet to help prevent kidney issues, including kidney stones. Do not take Salazar DS Tablet if you have an allergy to sulfa drugs or aspirin. Salazar DS Tablet may cause your skin, urine, saliva, and tears to appear orange or yellow in color. This is normal and not harmful. Regular blood tests are necessary while taking this medicine to monitor liver function, kidney function, and blood component levels. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor.
