How Upketo K5 works

Upketo-K5 Cream is a combination of five medicines : Ketoconazole, Clioquinol (Iodochlorhydroxyquin), Tolnaftate, Neomycin, and Clobetasol. Ketoconazole and tolnaftate is an antifungal medication. It kills and stops the growth of the fungi by destroying its cell membrane, thereby treating your skin infection. Clioquinol belongs to a category of drugs called hydroxyquinoline antifungal agents. It acts by interacting with Dna synthesis thus killing the fungi that are responsible for causing the infection. Neomycin is an antibiotic. It stops bacterial growth by preventing synthesis of essential proteins required by bacteria to carry out vital functions. Clobetasol is a steroid. It works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers that make the skin red, swollen and itchy.

How to take Upketo K5

Use this medicine as your doctor has directed. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is almost due, skip the one you missed — never take two doses together to catch up.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine is unlikely from skin use; swallowing the preparation may cause stomach upset. It is unlikely from skin use. It can suppress the body's own steroid production when it is used for a long time over large areas, especially in children. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Upketo K5

Most side effects of Upketo K5 are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Safety advice for Upketo K5

Warnings and precautions

Keep applying for the full period your doctor stated, usually two to four weeks, and for a week or two after the rash has cleared. Stopping when it looks better is why ringworm keeps coming back. Apply a little beyond the visible edge of the patch — the fungus extends further than the redness. Do not use a combination cream containing a steroid on a fungal infection unless a doctor has specifically prescribed it. The steroid calms the redness while the fungus spreads underneath. See a doctor if the rash covers a large area, involves the scalp or nails, or has not improved in two weeks — these usually need tablets as well. Use it for the short course prescribed, usually about a week. Prolonged use of a topical antibiotic breeds resistant bacteria. See a doctor if the area becomes more red, swollen, painful or spreads, or if you develop a fever — a spreading skin infection needs tablets. Clean the area gently before each application. Do not use it on large raw areas or burns unless your doctor has said to. Use it only on the area and for the number of days your doctor specified. Potent steroid creams thin the skin permanently when used for too long. Never use a potent steroid cream on the face, the groin or the underarms unless your doctor has specifically told you to — the skin there is thin and absorbs much more. Do not use it on an infection. A steroid on ringworm, impetigo or herpes makes the infection worse while hiding it. Do not use leftover cream on a new rash, and never pass it to someone else. Stop and see your doctor if the area becomes more painful, weepy or crusted.

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. For external use only. Not for use in the eyes. Not for use in or around the eyes. Not for untreated bacterial, fungal or viral skin infections.

How to store Upketo K5

Store below 30°C in the original pack, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.

Expert advice for Upketo K5

Keep the area clean and completely dry — fungus thrives in moisture and sweat. Wear loose cotton clothing, change it daily, and wash clothes and towels in hot water. Do not share towels, and treat affected family members at the same time. Wash your hands before and after applying, and cover the area if advised. Do not share towels or bedding while an infection is active. Apply a thin layer — a fingertip's worth covers an area about the size of two adult palms. Use a plain moisturiser generously alongside it; that is what keeps eczema away between flares. Ask your doctor for a written plan of how long to use it and when to step down.
