Voltafen Gel contains Menthol (5%w/w) + Diclofenac (1.16%w/w) + Linseed Oil (3%w/w) + Methyl Salicylate (10%w/w). It belongs to the Counter-irritant / topical anti-inflammatory and Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug class of medicines.

How Voltafen Gel works

Voltafen-Gel is a combination of four medicines: Diclofenac, Linseed Oil, Menthol and Methyl Salicylate. Diclofenac and Methyl Salicylate are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which work by blocking the release of certain chemical messengers that cause pain and inflammation (redness and swelling). Linseed Oil is a plant-based oil which further reduces inflammation and improves blood circulation at the site of application.It also increases the penetration of Diclofenac through the skin. Menthol produces a cooling effect on the skin.

How to take Voltafen Gel

Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer and rub it in gently. Wash your hands before and after use, unless your hands are the area being treated. This is for use on the skin only — do not swallow it. Follow the dose and the duration written on your prescription.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

Apply it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for the next application, skip the missed one — applying extra does not make up for it.

If you take too much

An overdose of this medicine is unlikely from skin use, but swallowing these preparations can be serious, particularly in children. It can cause stomach bleeding, kidney failure, drowsiness and fits. Do not wait for symptoms to appear — go to the nearest emergency department and take the pack or strip with you.

Side effects of Voltafen Gel

Most side effects of Voltafen are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:

Safety advice for Voltafen Gel

Warnings and precautions

For external use only. Keep it away from the eyes, mouth and broken skin. Do not apply a heating pad or hot water bottle over the treated area — this can cause a burn. Do not bandage tightly over it unless your doctor has told you to. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying, unless your hands are the area being treated. Stop if the skin becomes severely irritated or blisters. Take it with or just after food, and for the shortest time that works. Stop and seek urgent care for black or tarry stools, vomiting blood, or severe stomach pain — this group can cause bleeding from the stomach. Long or high-dose use raises the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney injury, particularly in older people and those already at risk. Avoid if you are dehydrated or have an illness with vomiting or loose motions — the kidneys are vulnerable then. Must be avoided in the last three months of pregnancy.

Do not take Voltafen if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for use on broken, infected or badly inflamed skin. Not for people with an active stomach ulcer, severe kidney or heart failure, or asthma triggered by aspirin or anti-inflammatory painkillers. Not in the third trimester of pregnancy.

Interactions with other medicines

Topical anti-inflammatory gels add to the effect of the same medicine taken by mouth; tell your doctor if you use both. Combining with a blood thinner or aspirin sharply raises the bleeding risk. Reduces the effect of blood pressure medicines and water tablets, and together with them can harm the kidneys. Never take two anti-inflammatory painkillers at the same time.

How to store Voltafen Gel

Store below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Close the cap tightly after each use. Keep out of the reach of children.

Expert advice for Voltafen Gel

Use a small amount and rub it in well. See a doctor if the pain has not improved within the period stated on the pack. Use the lowest dose for the shortest period. If you need a painkiller regularly, see your doctor rather than continuing on your own. Paracetamol is the safer choice for simple fever and headache.
