Iodine (10%w/v)
Wokadine 10 % Solution is used for skin antiseptic for cleaning/disinfecting minor cuts, wounds, abrasions and burns; pre-operative skin preparation; antiseptic cleansing to help prevent infection.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Wokadine 10 % Solution contains Iodine (10%w/v). It belongs to the Iodophor (iodine-based topical antiseptic) class of medicines.
Povidone iodine slowly releases free iodine on the skin. Iodine penetrates microorganisms and oxidizes/iodinates proteins and nucleic acids, leading to broad-spectrum antimicrobial action against bacteria, fungi, viruses and some protozoa.
For external use only. Apply undiluted on the affected area using cotton/gauze and allow to dry; can be used 1–3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. For pre-op skin prep, apply to the surgical site as per hospital protocol. Avoid contact with eyes and do not swallow.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Wokadine as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Wokadine than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Wokadine are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.
| Pregnancy | Use with caution / Consult doctor (avoid prolonged or extensive application) |
|---|---|
| Breastfeeding | Wokadine 10% Solution is safe to use during lactation. Human studies have shown that either the drug does not pass into the breastmilk in significant amount or is not expected to cause toxicity to the baby. |
| Alcohol | No known interaction (topical use) |
| Kidney | No interaction found/established |
| Liver | No interaction found/established |
| Habit forming | No |
For external use only. Do not use if allergic to iodine/povidone. Avoid use on large areas, deep puncture wounds, severe burns, or prolonged use without medical advice due to risk of iodine absorption and thyroid effects. Use with caution in thyroid disorders, patients on lithium, and in renal impairment. Stop use and seek medical help if severe irritation, swelling, or signs of allergy occur. Avoid contact with eyes/ears; if contact occurs rinse with water. Not for use in neonates/premature infants unless advised by a doctor.
Lithium (increased risk of hypothyroidism), other topical antiseptics/oxidizing agents (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, silver preparations, mercury-containing products) may reduce effectiveness or increase irritation; may interfere with thyroid function tests and radioiodine diagnostics/therapy.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from light. Keep container tightly closed. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
