Medically reviewed by Dr. Balaji Krishnan, MBBS · Updated August 2026
Xalatan 50 mcg/ml contains Latanoprost 50 mcg/ml (0.005% w/v) ophthalmic solution. It belongs to the Prostaglandin (PGF2α) analogue / ocular hypotensive class of medicines.
Reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension
Latanoprost is a prostaglandin F2α analogue. It increases uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humour from the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure.
For ophthalmic use only. Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening, or as prescribed. Remove contact lenses before use and reinsert after 15 minutes. If using other eye drops, keep at least 5 minutes gap between products.
Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.
Take the missed dose of Xalatan as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the usual schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.
Taking more Xalatan than prescribed can be harmful. If you suspect an overdose, contact a doctor or go to the nearest emergency department at once, and carry the pack or strip with you. In India the emergency number is 112.
Most side effects of Xalatan are mild and settle as the body adjusts. Reported side effects include:
Stop the medicine and seek help immediately for a rash, swelling of the face or lips, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about any side effect that persists or worries you.

Do not use if allergic to latanoprost. May cause permanent darkening of iris color and eyelid skin, and increased eyelash growth; effects may be more noticeable with long-term use. Use with caution in patients with history of uveitis/iritis, macular edema (especially aphakia/pseudophakia with torn posterior lens capsule), or herpetic keratitis. Avoid contaminating dropper tip; do not touch eye or surfaces. Discard bottle as per label after opening (commonly within 4 weeks).
Other prostaglandin analogues (may reduce efficacy or cause paradoxical IOP increase),thimerosal-containing eye drops (may precipitate—separate dosing),other topical ophthalmic drugs (space by 5 minutes)
Store refrigerated at 2–8°C before opening; protect from light. After opening, store as per label (often below 25°C) and keep bottle tightly closed; do not freeze.
