Short-term management of anxiety disorders, anxiety associated with depression, preoperative anxiety/sedation (as prescribed)
Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) at the GABA-A receptor. This reduces neuronal excitability, producing anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant effects.
Take exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Usually taken by mouth 1–3 times daily; can be taken with or without food (take with food if stomach upset occurs). Avoid abrupt discontinuation; dose is typically tapered to stop.
Drowsiness, dizziness, sedation, fatigue, weakness, unsteadiness/ataxia, confusion, impaired coordination, memory problems
Causes drowsiness and impaired alertness—avoid driving/operating machinery. Risk of dependence, tolerance and withdrawal (may include anxiety, insomnia, tremor, seizures) especially with prolonged use or high doses; do not stop suddenly. Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants due to risk of severe sedation and respiratory depression. Use caution in elderly (falls, confusion), liver/renal impairment, respiratory disease (COPD, sleep apnoea), depression/suicidal risk. Contraindicated in severe respiratory insufficiency and acute narrow-angle glaucoma; use only under medical supervision. Not recommended with opioids unless necessary; monitor closely.
Alcohol, opioids (e.g., morphine, tramadol), other sedatives/hypnotics, antipsychotics, antidepressants, antihistamines (sedating), anticonvulsants—additive CNS/respiratory depression; valproate and probenecid may increase lorazepam levels/effects; clozapine may increase sedation/respiratory depression
