Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic that enhances the effect of GABA at the GABA-A receptor (preferentially at the benzodiazepine-1 subtype). This reduces neuronal activity in the brain, helping induce sleep and improve sleep continuity.

Risk of dependence, misuse and withdrawal—use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Complex sleep behaviors (sleep-walking, sleep-driving, etc.) can occur; stop and seek medical help if they occur. Use with caution in elderly, liver impairment, respiratory disease (sleep apnea/COPD), depression or history of substance use; dose reduction may be needed. Do not use with other CNS depressants unless advised. Not recommended in children; avoid abrupt discontinuation after prolonged use.
