Monograph
Tablet
Iron deficiency (iron-deficiency anaemia) and prevention/treatment of iron deficiency due to increased requirements (e.g., pregnancy, lactation) or inadequate dietary intake (as advised by a doctor).
Iron supplements replenish body iron stores required for haemoglobin formation and oxygen transport. Correcting iron deficiency improves red blood cell production and helps relieve symptoms like fatigue and weakness.
Tablet to be taken orally as directed by the physician. Usually taken once daily or as prescribed; take with water. Best absorbed on an empty stomach, but may be taken with food if it causes stomach upset; avoid taking with tea/coffee/milk/antacids close to the dose.
Nausea, stomach upset, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, dark/black stools, metallic taste
Do not use in iron overload conditions (e.g., haemochromatosis/haemosiderosis) or non–iron-deficiency anaemia unless advised. Keep out of reach of children—accidental overdose can be serious. Use with caution in peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver disease. If severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or allergic symptoms occur, seek medical attention.
Antacids, proton pump inhibitors, tetracyclines, quinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin), levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, penicillamine, methyldopa, calcium supplements, zinc/magnesium supplements, tea/coffee and high-fibre foods (reduce absorption)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original pack and tightly closed.
