Monograph
Syrup
Fever and mild to moderate pain (e.g., headache, body ache) in children/infants, as advised by a doctor.
If it contains paracetamol (common in pediatric antipyretic syrups), it lowers fever by acting on the temperature-regulating center in the brain and reduces pain by decreasing prostaglandin production. Exact mechanism depends on the confirmed active ingredient(s).
Oral syrup. Shake well before use and measure with a calibrated spoon/cup/dropper. Dose is usually based on child’s weight/age; give at the interval advised by the doctor. Can be taken with or without food; give with food/milk if stomach upset occurs.
Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, rash
Do not exceed the recommended dose or use multiple medicines containing the same antipyretic/analgesic (e.g., paracetamol) together. Seek medical advice if fever persists >3 days, pain persists >5 days, child is very drowsy, has breathing difficulty, dehydration, or rash/swelling. Use with caution in liver disease, severe kidney disease, malnutrition, or dehydration. Accidental overdose can cause serious liver injury—seek urgent care.
Other paracetamol-containing products, alcohol (in older patients), warfarin (with prolonged use), enzyme inducers (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine, rifampicin), isoniazid
