Tablet
Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults (not for migraine prevention).
Almotriptan is a selective serotonin (5‑HT1B/5‑HT1D) receptor agonist. It constricts dilated cranial blood vessels and inhibits release of inflammatory neuropeptides, reducing migraine pain and associated symptoms.
Oral tablet. Take 1 tablet at the first sign of a migraine headache (or as advised). If the migraine returns, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours; do not exceed 2 tablets (25 mg) in 24 hours. Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water.
Nausea, dizziness, sleepiness (somnolence), fatigue, dry mouth, tingling/paresthesia, flushing, throat or chest tightness/pressure sensation
Not for use in patients with ischemic heart disease, history of heart attack, Prinzmetal’s angina, uncontrolled hypertension, stroke/TIA, peripheral vascular disease, or severe liver impairment. Use caution in patients with cardiovascular risk factors; first dose may require medical supervision. Do not use for hemiplegic or basilar migraine. Seek urgent care for chest pain, shortness of breath, severe allergic reactions, or signs of serotonin syndrome (agitation, fever, sweating, tremor).
Ergotamine/ergot derivatives and other triptans (avoid within 24 hours), MAO inhibitors (avoid/use caution as per prescribing info), SSRIs/SNRIs/tricyclics and other serotonergic drugs (risk of serotonin syndrome), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole/itraconazole/clarithromycin/ritonavir (may increase levels; use caution)
