Prevention (prophylaxis) of angina pectoris (chest pain) due to coronary artery disease

Nitroglycerin is converted to nitric oxide in vascular smooth muscle, causing relaxation. This dilates veins and arteries, reducing preload and myocardial oxygen demand and improving coronary blood flow, thereby preventing angina.

Take exactly as prescribed. Usually taken by mouth as a prolonged/controlled-release tablet; swallow whole with water—do not crush or chew. Often taken on a regular schedule; may be taken with or without food. Your doctor may advise a daily nitrate-free interval to reduce tolerance.

Headache, dizziness, flushing, lightheadedness, low blood pressure, nausea, palpitations, weakness

Can cause significant hypotension and dizziness—avoid driving if affected and rise slowly from sitting/lying. Do not use with PDE-5 inhibitors (sildenafil/tadalafil/vardenafil) or riociguat due to life-threatening fall in blood pressure. Use caution in severe anemia, increased intracranial pressure, recent head injury/brain hemorrhage, severe hypotension, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, and in elderly. Not intended for rapid relief of an acute angina attack unless specifically prescribed; seek urgent care for persistent chest pain.

PDE-5 inhibitors (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil), riociguat, other antihypertensives, alcohol, other nitrates/nitrites, vasodilators, tricyclic antidepressants/antipsychotics (may increase hypotension), ergot alkaloids (may reduce antianginal effect)

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep in original blister/pack and out of reach of children.
