Monograph
Glimepiride (2mg) + Metformin (500mg) + Voglibose (0.2mg)
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (adult) when blood sugar is not adequately controlled with diet/exercise and/or single antidiabetic therapy; helps control fasting and post‑meal glucose.
Glimepiride (a sulfonylurea) stimulates the pancreas to release insulin and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity. Metformin (a biguanide) reduces hepatic glucose production and decreases intestinal glucose absorption while improving insulin sensitivity, resulting in better overall glycaemic control.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily with breakfast or the first main meal (sometimes twice daily depending on dose). Swallow whole with water; take with food to reduce stomach upset. Do not skip meals to avoid hypoglycaemia; monitor blood glucose regularly.
Hypoglycaemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, metallic taste, headache, dizziness, weight gain, skin rash
May cause hypoglycaemia (risk increases with missed meals, excessive exercise, alcohol, or other antidiabetics); carry sugar source. Use with caution in elderly and in kidney/liver impairment. Metformin rarely can cause lactic acidosis—seek urgent care for rapid breathing, severe weakness, abdominal pain, or unusual sleepiness; avoid in severe renal impairment, dehydration, severe infection, shock, or hypoxia. Temporarily stop metformin before/after iodinated contrast procedures and major surgery as advised. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Alcohol (increases risk of hypoglycaemia and lactic acidosis), other antidiabetics/insulin (additive hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids and thiazide diuretics (raise glucose), ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia), rifampicin (may alter glimepiride effect), azole antifungals/clarithromycin (may increase sulfonylurea levels), iodinated contrast media (metformin—lactic acidosis risk), cimetidine (may increase metformin levels)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
