Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), chronic stable angina, vasospastic (Prinzmetal) angina; helps reduce risk of cardiovascular events related to high BP.

Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. It relaxes and widens blood vessels by reducing calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle, lowering blood pressure and decreasing the heart’s workload, thereby relieving angina.

Tablet for oral use. Take as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Headache, dizziness, flushing, ankle/foot swelling (peripheral edema), fatigue, palpitations, nausea, abdominal pain

Use with caution in severe hypotension, heart failure, severe aortic stenosis, liver impairment (dose adjustment may be needed). May cause dizziness—avoid driving/operating machinery if affected. Do not discontinue abruptly. Seek medical help for severe swelling, fainting, chest pain worsening, or allergic reactions.

Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir, clarithromycin) may increase levels, CYP3A4 inducers (e.g. rifampicin, phenytoin, carbamazepine) may reduce effect, simvastatin (limit dose as per clinician), grapefruit juice (may increase levels in some), tacrolimus/cyclosporine (monitor levels)
