Atorvastatin (40mg)
High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), mixed dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia; prevention of cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) in at-risk patients
Atorvastatin inhibits HMG‑CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This increases hepatic LDL-receptor activity, lowering LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol, and modestly lowering triglycerides while raising HDL.
Oral tablet. Take once daily at the same time each day, with or without food, as prescribed. Continue diet and exercise; do not stop without medical advice.
Headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, constipation, muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain, elevated liver enzymes
Not recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Use with caution in liver disease, heavy alcohol use, hypothyroidism, kidney impairment, or history of muscle disorders. Seek medical help for unexplained muscle pain/weakness, fever, or dark urine (risk of myopathy/rhabdomyolysis). Periodic lipid profile and liver function tests may be advised.
Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, erythromycin, ketoconazole/itraconazole, HIV protease inhibitors) may increase atorvastatin levels; cyclosporine; gemfibrozil and other fibrates; niacin; warfarin (monitor INR); digoxin; grapefruit juice (large amounts).
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
