How Ativan 1 mg Tablet works

Lorazepam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) at GABA-A receptors in the brain. This produces anxiolytic, sedative, muscle-relaxant and anticonvulsant effects.

How to take Ativan 1 mg Tablet

Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed by the doctor, usually in divided doses; can be taken with or without food. Avoid abrupt discontinuation after regular use; dose is tapered gradually.

Take it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or stop early on your own.

Missed dose and overdose

If you miss a dose

If you miss a dose of Ativan 1mg Tablet, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.\n

Warnings and precautions

Prescription-only benzodiazepine; may cause dependence, tolerance and withdrawal—use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Use caution in elderly (falls, confusion), liver or kidney impairment, respiratory disease (COPD/sleep apnea), depression/suicidal risk, and history of substance use disorder. Do not drive or operate machinery. Do not stop suddenly after long-term use; withdrawal may include anxiety, insomnia, tremor and seizures.

Do not take Ativan if

Not for anyone with a known allergy to this medicine or to any ingredient in the pack. Not for people with severe breathing problems, sleep apnoea, or severe liver disease. Not for anyone with a history of dependence, except under specialist supervision.

Interactions with other medicines

Alcohol and other CNS depressants (opioids, sedating antihistamines, antipsychotics, antidepressants) increase sedation/respiratory depression; valproate may increase lorazepam levels; probenecid may reduce clearance; clozapine increases risk of respiratory depression/hypotension; theophylline/caffeine may reduce sedative effect.
