Insulin glargine (strength/volume not specified) in prefilled disposable pen
Treatment of diabetes mellitus to improve glycaemic control (as basal insulin) in adults and/or children as prescribed by a doctor.
Insulin glargine is a long-acting basal insulin analogue. After subcutaneous injection it forms microprecipitates that slowly release insulin, providing a relatively steady glucose-lowering effect over ~24 hours.
For subcutaneous use only via the disposable pen as instructed by a healthcare professional. Inject once daily at the same time each day (or as prescribed); rotate injection sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm). Do not inject into a vein or muscle; do not mix with other insulins unless advised. Check the label, solution appearance, and dose before each use; use a new needle each injection and dispose safely.
Hypoglycaemia, injection site reactions (pain/redness/swelling/itching), weight gain, lipodystrophy at injection site, rash, oedema
Risk of severe hypoglycaemia—carry glucose and monitor blood sugar regularly. Dose adjustments may be needed with changes in diet, exercise, illness, renal/hepatic impairment, or when switching insulin products. Do not share pens/needles to prevent infection transmission. Not for treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Use caution when driving/operating machinery if hypoglycaemia unawareness. Seek medical help for severe allergy (wheezing, swelling, generalized rash).
Other antidiabetic drugs (additive hypoglycaemia), beta-blockers (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), ACE inhibitors/ARBs (may increase hypoglycaemia risk), corticosteroids/thyroid hormones/diuretics/sympathomimetics (may increase blood glucose), alcohol (can increase risk of hypoglycaemia), MAO inhibitors and salicylates (may potentiate hypoglycaemia)
Store unopened pens refrigerated at 2–8°C; do not freeze. Keep away from light; do not use if frozen. After first use, store as per pack instructions (commonly at room temperature, protected from heat/light) and discard after the in-use period mentioned on the label. Keep cap on when not in use.
