Use with caution (may increase dizziness and low blood pressure)
Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic heart failure, left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction (as prescribed).
Carvedilol is a non-selective beta-blocker with additional alpha-1 blocking activity. It reduces heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand and also relaxes blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and improving cardiac output in heart failure.
Take by mouth exactly as prescribed. Usually taken with food to reduce dizziness/low blood pressure. Swallow the tablet with water at the same time each day; do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
Dizziness, fatigue, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, headache, diarrhea, nausea, weight gain, peripheral edema
May cause dizziness or fainting especially after the first dose or dose increase; rise slowly from sitting/lying. Do not stop suddenly (risk of worsening angina/heart failure). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may cause bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask low blood sugar symptoms), thyroid disease, peripheral vascular disease, liver disease, and severe kidney impairment. Contraindicated/avoid in severe bradycardia, certain heart blocks, cardiogenic shock, decompensated heart failure, severe asthma, and severe hepatic impairment unless advised by a cardiologist. Driving/operating machinery may be affected.
Other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), diuretics (increased BP lowering), digoxin (increased levels/bradycardia), amiodarone/other antiarrhythmics and non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers like verapamil/diltiazem (heart block/bradycardia), clonidine (rebound hypertension on withdrawal), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycemia), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), CYP2D6 inhibitors like fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (may increase carvedilol), rifampicin (may reduce effect).
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
