Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); helps reduce cardiovascular risk associated with uncontrolled BP
Cilnidipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels by reducing calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle, lowering blood pressure. It also blocks N-type calcium channels, which may reduce sympathetic overactivity and help control heart rate-related effects.
Take orally as advised by the doctor, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; swallow whole with water. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
Headache, dizziness, flushing, ankle/foot swelling (edema), palpitations, fatigue, nausea
Use with caution in liver impairment, severe aortic stenosis, heart failure, or very low blood pressure. May cause dizziness—avoid driving/operating machinery until you know its effects. Monitor blood pressure regularly. Inform doctor if swelling of legs, worsening breathlessness, or chest pain occurs.
Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., clarithromycin, azole antifungals, ritonavir) may increase levels, CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin) may reduce effect, grapefruit juice may increase levels
