Monograph
Tablet
Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (intermittent claudication) due to poor blood circulation; adjunct in peripheral vascular disease to improve walking distance and reduce leg pain/cramps
Pentoxifylline is a hemorheologic agent that improves blood flow by increasing red blood cell flexibility and reducing blood viscosity. It also reduces platelet aggregation and improves microcirculation, helping oxygen delivery to tissues.
Tablet (extended-release): take exactly as prescribed, usually after meals to reduce stomach upset. Swallow whole with water; do not crush, chew, or split. Take at the same time each day.
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, flushing, palpitations
Use with caution in patients with bleeding disorders, recent cerebral/retinal hemorrhage, peptic ulcer disease, severe coronary artery disease, or hypotension. May increase bleeding risk especially with anticoagulants/antiplatelets; monitor for unusual bleeding/bruising. Caution in renal or hepatic impairment; dose adjustment/monitoring may be needed. Stop and seek care if severe chest pain, fainting, allergic reaction, or bleeding occurs.
Anticoagulants (warfarin), antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel), NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac), antihypertensives (may increase hypotension), theophylline (increased theophylline levels), ciprofloxacin/cimetidine (may increase pentoxifylline levels)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
Trental 400 SR Tablet, Pentoxifylline SR 400 Tablet (generic), Pentoxifylline SR 600 Tablet (generic), Pentaloc SR Tablet (pentoxifylline SR)
