Monograph
Tablet
Peripheral vascular disease with intermittent claudication, impaired peripheral circulation (e.g., peripheral arterial disease) to improve walking distance and reduce leg pain/cramps due to poor blood flow
Pentoxifylline improves blood flow by increasing red blood cell flexibility and reducing blood viscosity. It also improves microcirculation and tissue oxygenation, helping relieve symptoms of poor peripheral circulation.
Tablet (usually SR/ER): Take as prescribed, typically with food to reduce stomach upset; swallow whole with water—do not crush or chew. Take at the same time each day.
nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, flushing, indigestion
Use with caution in patients with recent cerebral/retinal hemorrhage, active bleeding, peptic ulcer disease, low blood pressure, severe coronary artery disease, liver or kidney impairment. May increase bleeding risk especially with anticoagulants/antiplatelets; monitor for unusual bleeding/bruising. Use caution when driving if dizziness occurs. Not for self-medication; dose adjustments may be needed in renal impairment.
Anticoagulants (warfarin), antiplatelets (aspirin, clopidogrel), NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac), antihypertensives (may enhance hypotensive effect), theophylline (increased levels/toxicity), ciprofloxacin (may increase pentoxifylline levels), insulin/oral antidiabetics (may increase hypoglycemia risk)
Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
