Bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including acne vulgaris, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, genitourinary infections, and certain other infections where tetracyclines are indicated
Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. This blocks the addition of amino acids to the growing peptide chain, thereby stopping bacterial growth.
Take the capsule exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Usually taken with a full glass of water; may be taken with food if stomach upset occurs. Avoid taking with milk/dairy, antacids, iron, calcium, magnesium or zinc supplements within 2 hours before/after; do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after dosing.
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dizziness/vertigo, headache, photosensitivity, skin rash, discoloration of skin/teeth, vaginal/oral thrush
Prescription-only antibiotic; use only for bacterial infections. Avoid in pregnancy and in children <8 years due to risk of teeth discoloration and effects on bone growth. Can cause dizziness/vertigo—use caution while driving. Photosensitivity may occur—limit sun exposure/use sunscreen. Rare but serious: severe allergy, drug-induced hepatitis, pancreatitis, intracranial hypertension (persistent headache/blurred vision), severe skin reactions; seek medical help if these occur. Use with caution in liver disease; monitor if prolonged therapy. Not recommended for patients with known tetracycline hypersensitivity.
Antacids or supplements containing aluminum/calcium/magnesium/iron/zinc (reduced absorption), isotretinoin/other retinoids (risk of intracranial hypertension), warfarin and other anticoagulants (may increase effect—monitor INR), penicillins (possible antagonism), enzyme-inducing antiepileptics such as phenytoin/carbamazepine/barbiturates (reduced minocycline levels), oral contraceptives (may reduce efficacy—use additional contraception)
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
