Treatment of hypoglycemia; rapid carbohydrate/calorie supply; adjunct in insulin-induced hypoglycemia and acute symptomatic low blood sugar.
Dextrose is glucose that rapidly increases blood glucose levels when given intravenously. It provides an immediate energy source and helps reverse symptoms of hypoglycemia.
To be administered intravenously by a healthcare professional. Dose depends on severity of hypoglycemia and patient age; monitor blood glucose and electrolytes during/after infusion.
Injection-site irritation, phlebitis, hyperglycemia, fluid overload, electrolyte imbalance, nausea
Use caution in diabetes mellitus, intracranial hemorrhage, severe dehydration, and patients at risk of fluid overload (heart/renal failure). Extravasation can cause tissue injury; ensure IV patency. Monitor blood glucose to avoid rebound hyperglycemia.
Insulin and oral antidiabetics (dose adjustments), corticosteroids/thiazides (raise glucose), IV fluids/electrolytes (monitor compatibility)
