Monograph
Gel
Temporary relief of localized muscle and joint pain, sprains/strains, sports injuries, back/neck pain, tendonitis, and mild osteoarthritis pain (where a diclofenac-based pain-relief gel is prescribed).
Topical diclofenac (an NSAID) reduces pain and swelling by inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes and lowering prostaglandin production at the site of application. This decreases local inflammation and provides analgesic effect with minimal systemic exposure compared to oral NSAIDs.
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and gently massage until absorbed, typically 3–4 times daily or as directed by a doctor. Wash hands after application; avoid eyes, mouth, genitals, and broken/irritated skin; do not apply under occlusive dressing unless advised.
Application site burning, itching, redness, dryness, rash, contact dermatitis
Do not use on open wounds, infected skin, or eczema. Avoid use if allergic to diclofenac/aspirin/other NSAIDs (may cause wheezing or severe allergy). Use with caution in asthma, history of peptic ulcer/bleeding, kidney or heart disease, and if using other NSAIDs. Avoid prolonged use over large areas; stop and consult a doctor if rash/irritation occurs. Not recommended in the last trimester of pregnancy. Keep away from heat/flames if the gel base is alcohol-containing.
Other NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen), anticoagulants/antiplatelets (warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel), corticosteroids, SSRIs/SNRIs (bleeding risk), antihypertensives (ACE inhibitors/ARBs/diuretics) if significant systemic absorption occurs with extensive use
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from direct light and moisture. Keep the cap tightly closed and out of reach of children.
