Monograph
Tablet
Relief of fever; mild to moderate pain such as headache, body ache, toothache, sore throat, backache, muscle aches, and pain associated with cold/flu.
Paracetamol reduces pain and fever by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system and by acting on the heat-regulating center in the brain. It has minimal anti-inflammatory effect at usual doses.
Tablet for oral use. Take as advised by a doctor; commonly 1 tablet (650 mg) every 6–8 hours as needed. Swallow with water, with or without food (take after food if it causes stomach upset). Do not exceed 4,000 mg paracetamol/day from all sources; avoid using multiple cold/fever products containing paracetamol together.
Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, rash, allergic reactions, elevated liver enzymes (with high doses/overuse)
Do not exceed the recommended dose; overdose can cause severe liver damage. Use with caution in liver disease, chronic alcoholism, severe malnutrition, dehydration, or if taking other paracetamol-containing medicines. Stop and seek medical help if rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe skin reactions occur. Consult a doctor if fever lasts >3 days or pain lasts >5 days.
Alcohol (increases risk of liver toxicity), Warfarin/other coumarin anticoagulants (long-term use may increase bleeding risk), Isoniazid, Rifampicin, Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Phenobarbital/primidone (may increase liver toxicity), Probenecid (may increase paracetamol levels), Cholestyramine (reduces absorption if taken together)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
