Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), thyroid hormone replacement after thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy, TSH suppression in certain thyroid conditions as prescribed

Levothyroxine is synthetic thyroxine (T4), a thyroid hormone. It is converted to T3 in tissues and restores normal thyroid hormone levels, improving metabolism, energy and organ function, and normalizing TSH.

Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily on an empty stomach with water, preferably 30–60 minutes before breakfast. Take at the same time each day; avoid taking with calcium/iron/antacids within 4 hours. Dose is individualized based on TSH/clinical response; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Not for weight loss or obesity treatment. Use caution in heart disease (angina, coronary artery disease, arrhythmias), elderly, and patients with adrenal insufficiency (treat adrenal issue first). Overdose may cause hyperthyroid symptoms and serious cardiac effects. Monitor TSH/Free T4 periodically; dose adjustments needed with pregnancy, major weight change, and interacting medicines.

Reduced absorption with calcium salts, iron salts, aluminium/magnesium antacids, sucralfate, cholestyramine/colestipol, sevelamer; take separated by 4 hours. Rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital may increase clearance. Warfarin effect may increase (monitor INR). Antidiabetic medicines may need adjustment. Amiodarone and lithium can affect thyroid function. Estrogens may increase dose requirement.

Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original strip/container and out of reach of children.
