Melatonin 5 mg
Short-term treatment of insomnia (difficulty falling asleep) and sleep-wake cycle disturbances such as jet lag; may be used for circadian rhythm sleep disorders as advised by a doctor.
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the pineal gland that helps regulate the sleep–wake cycle. Supplementation signals the body that it is time to sleep, helping reduce sleep-onset latency and improve sleep quality in some patients.
Oral tablet; take exactly as prescribed. Commonly taken once daily in the evening, about 30–60 minutes before bedtime; preferably at the same time each night. May be taken with or without food; avoid taking with a heavy/fatty meal as it may delay onset. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking.
Drowsiness,headache,dizziness,nausea,vivid dreams,fatigue
May cause daytime sleepiness—avoid driving/operating machinery after use. Use with caution in depression, epilepsy/seizure disorders, autoimmune diseases, liver impairment, and in the elderly. Not recommended for children unless prescribed. If insomnia persists beyond 1–2 weeks, consult a doctor. Do not combine with other sedatives unless advised.
CNS depressants (benzodiazepines, opioids, sedating antihistamines, alcohol),fluvoxamine (may markedly increase melatonin levels),warfarin/anticoagulants (may increase bleeding risk),immunosuppressants (may reduce effectiveness),antihypertensives (may affect BP),oral contraceptives (may increase melatonin levels)
