Ferrous ascorbate + Folic acid (strengths not specified)
Treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anaemia, anaemia due to poor dietary intake, increased iron requirement in pregnancy/lactation, folate deficiency anaemia
Ferrous ascorbate replenishes iron stores required for haemoglobin formation and oxygen transport. Folic acid is essential for DNA synthesis and red blood cell production; together they help correct anaemia and improve haemoglobin levels.
Oral tablet/capsule. Take as advised by physician, usually once daily after food to reduce stomach upset; swallow whole with water. Avoid taking at the same time as tea/coffee, milk, calcium or antacids; keep a 2-hour gap.
Nausea, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, dark/black stools, metallic taste, heartburn
Do not use in iron overload states (haemochromatosis/haemosiderosis) or non–iron-deficiency anaemia unless prescribed. Use with caution in peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver disease. Keep out of reach of children—accidental overdose of iron can be fatal. If severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or allergic reactions occur, seek medical help.
Antacids, calcium supplements, milk, tea/coffee (reduced absorption), tetracyclines, fluoroquinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin/ofloxacin/levofloxacin), levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, penicillamine, methyldopa, levodopa/carbidopa—separate dosing by 2–4 hours
