Monograph
Tablet
Treatment and prevention of iron deficiency anaemia; nutritional supplementation in pregnancy and lactation; anaemia due to folate/Vitamin B12 deficiency; support during blood loss, heavy menstrual bleeding, and recovery from illness.
Iron replenishes body iron stores and helps form haemoglobin for oxygen transport. Folic acid and vitamin B12 support red blood cell formation and maturation. Zinc supports immunity and aids recovery in nutritional deficiency states.
Tablet to be taken orally as advised by doctor, usually once daily. Preferably take after food if it causes stomach upset; take at the same time each day. Avoid taking together with milk, tea/coffee, antacids or calcium supplements; keep a 2-hour gap.
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, heartburn, dark/black stools, metallic taste
Do not use in iron overload conditions (e.g., haemochromatosis/haemosiderosis) or non-iron deficiency anaemia unless prescribed. Use with caution in peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and liver disease. Iron products can cause severe toxicity in children—keep out of reach. If persistent stomach pain, vomiting, or allergic reaction occurs, seek medical advice.
Antacids, calcium salts, milk, tea/coffee (reduced iron absorption), tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones (reduced absorption of both), levothyroxine (reduced absorption), bisphosphonates (reduced absorption), penicillamine (reduced absorption), methyldopa (reduced effect), chloramphenicol (may reduce hematologic response)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep in original pack and out of reach of children.
