Prevention and treatment of nutritional deficiencies such as iron deficiency anemia and folate/vitamin B12 deficiency (as in pregnancy, lactation, heavy menstrual bleeding, poor dietary intake).
Iron replenishes body iron stores and supports hemoglobin formation to improve oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Folic acid and vitamin B12 support red blood cell production and help correct megaloblastic anemia due to folate/B12 deficiency.
Take as advised by a doctor. Usually taken orally once daily; swallow whole with water. Preferably take after food if it causes stomach upset; avoid taking at the same time as tea/coffee, milk/calcium or antacids (keep a 2-hour gap).
Nausea, abdominal discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, dark/black stools, metallic taste, heartburn
Do not use in iron overload conditions (hemochromatosis/hemosiderosis) or non–iron deficiency anemia unless prescribed. Iron can cause severe poisoning in children—keep out of reach. Use caution in peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease; may cause dark stools and constipation. If symptoms of allergy or severe stomach pain occur, seek medical help.
Antacids, calcium supplements/dairy, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin), levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, penicillamine, methyldopa—separate dosing by 2-4 hours; chloramphenicol may reduce hematologic response to iron; proton pump inhibitors may reduce iron absorption
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and direct light. Keep the strip tightly closed and out of reach of children.
