Ointment
Topical treatment of bacterial skin infections; may be used for infected eczema/dermatitis, impetigo, infected cuts/wounds, and other localized superficial skin infections when prescribed.
Typically contains an antibacterial (commonly fusidic acid) that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis and reduces bacterial growth on the skin. Some variants also include a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation, redness and itching; the antibiotic treats the infection while the steroid relieves inflammatory symptoms.
For external use only. Clean and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer to the affected skin as directed by a doctor (often 2–3 times daily). Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and inside the nose; wash hands after application. Do not use on large areas, broken skin or under occlusive dressings unless advised.
Burning, stinging, itching, redness, dryness, irritation, rash, contact dermatitis
Use only on affected skin for the prescribed duration; prolonged/overuse can cause resistance (antibiotic) and skin thinning/striae (if steroid is present). Avoid use on viral or fungal skin infections unless specifically advised. Stop and seek medical help if severe irritation, swelling, worsening infection, or allergic reaction occurs. Use caution on face, groin, armpits and in children; avoid near eyes.
No major systemic interactions expected with topical use. If a corticosteroid is present, avoid concurrent application with other potent topical steroids/irritants on the same site unless advised; inform doctor about other topical medicines being used on the area.
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from heat and direct light. Keep tube tightly closed and out of reach of children.
