Type 2 diabetes mellitus (to improve blood glucose control) when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient.
This is typically a combination of an insulin sensitizer and an insulin secretagogue used in type 2 diabetes. It helps lower blood sugar by improving the body’s response to insulin and increasing insulin release from the pancreas.
Take as advised by your doctor, usually with meals to reduce stomach upset and risk of low blood sugar. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew. Monitor blood glucose regularly and follow diet/exercise advice.
Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, weight gain
Risk of hypoglycaemia (especially if meals are skipped, with alcohol, or with other antidiabetics); monitor blood glucose. Use with caution in elderly and in kidney/liver impairment. Seek urgent care for symptoms of severe hypoglycaemia, allergic reactions, or unexplained rapid breathing/weakness (possible lactic acidosis if metformin-containing). Inform your doctor before surgery or contrast (dye) scans; medicine may need temporary stoppage. Not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Other antidiabetic medicines/insulin (increased hypoglycaemia), alcohol (increases hypoglycaemia and lactic acidosis risk if metformin-containing), beta-blockers (mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), corticosteroids and diuretics (raise blood glucose), ACE inhibitors (may increase hypoglycaemia), rifampicin/phenytoin (alter glucose control), iodinated contrast media (kidney risk and lactic acidosis risk with metformin-containing)
