Monograph
Xylometazoline hydrochloride 0.025% w/v (nasal drops)
Temporary relief of nasal congestion due to common cold, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or upper respiratory tract infections in children (as directed by a doctor).
Xylometazoline is a topical nasal decongestant (alpha-adrenergic agonist) that constricts blood vessels in the nasal mucosa. This reduces swelling and congestion, improving airflow through the nose.
For intranasal use only. Instill the prescribed number of drops into each nostril, usually 2–3 times daily. Use for short duration only (generally not more than 3–5 days) to avoid rebound congestion; follow pediatrician’s advice. Clear the nose before use; keep dropper tip clean and avoid touching the nostril.
Nasal burning/stinging, dryness or irritation of nose/throat, sneezing, headache, nausea, palpitations, nervousness, rebound congestion (with prolonged use)
Do not use for more than 3–5 days unless advised by a doctor (risk of rebound congestion/rhinitis medicamentosa). Use with caution in children and only as directed. Avoid use in children with known hypersensitivity to xylometazoline. Use caution in hyperthyroidism, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, glaucoma, enlarged prostate, or if the child is on antidepressants. Do not use if there is severe nasal inflammation/injury or after certain nasal surgeries unless prescribed. Seek medical help if symptoms persist/worsen or if child develops rapid heartbeat, severe headache, or excessive drowsiness.
MAO inhibitors (and within 14 days of stopping), tricyclic antidepressants, other sympathomimetics/decongestants (additive cardiovascular effects), beta-blockers/antihypertensives (may affect BP control)
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Keep bottle tightly closed. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
