Monograph
Tablet
Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia (including nutritional anemia) and anemia due to increased requirements such as pregnancy/lactation, blood loss, or poor dietary intake.
Iron replenishes body iron stores and is required for hemoglobin formation and oxygen transport. Folic acid and/or vitamin B12 (if present) support red blood cell production and maturation, helping correct anemia.
Tablet: take exactly as advised by a doctor. Commonly taken once daily after food to reduce stomach upset; swallow with water. Avoid taking along with tea/coffee, milk, calcium/antacids; keep a 2–4 hour gap from such products.
Nausea, stomach upset, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, metallic taste, dark/black stools, vomiting
Do not use in iron overload states (hemochromatosis/hemosiderosis) or non–iron-deficiency anemia unless prescribed. Use with caution in peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic liver disease. Iron overdose can be dangerous in children—keep out of reach. If pregnant/breastfeeding or if anemia cause is unknown, consult a doctor for evaluation and appropriate dosing.
Antacids/calcium supplements, tetracyclines, quinolones (ciprofloxacin/levofloxacin), levothyroxine, penicillamine, bisphosphonates, methyldopa, chloramphenicol; foods/drinks like tea/coffee and high-fiber foods can reduce absorption (separate dosing by 2–4 hours).
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from moisture and light. Keep the strip tightly closed and out of reach of children.
