Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); reduction of risk of stroke in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy; treatment of diabetic nephropathy (kidney protection) in type 2 diabetes with proteinuria.
Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks AT1 receptors, preventing angiotensin II–mediated vasoconstriction and aldosterone release. This lowers blood pressure and helps protect the heart and kidneys.
Oral tablet. Take as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow with water; do not stop abruptly without medical advice. Dose may be adjusted based on blood pressure, kidney function and other medicines.
Dizziness, low blood pressure (hypotension),fatigue, headache, raised potassium (hyperkalemia),nausea, diarrhea, back pain, upper respiratory tract infection
Not recommended in pregnancy (can harm unborn baby), especially in 2nd/3rd trimester—stop and consult doctor immediately if pregnant. Use caution in kidney disease, renal artery stenosis, dehydration/low salt intake, heart failure, and liver impairment. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function (creatinine) and serum potassium. Risk of hyperkalemia increases with potassium supplements/salt substitutes. Seek help for facial/lip swelling (angioedema) though rare.
ACE inhibitors or aliskiren (in diabetes/kidney impairment) may increase risk of kidney problems and hyperkalemia; potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone, eplerenone, amiloride) increase hyperkalemia; NSAIDs (ibuprofen, diclofenac) may reduce antihypertensive effect and worsen kidney function; lithium levels may increase; other antihypertensives/diuretics may increase risk of hypotension.
Store below 25°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
