For intravenous use only; reconstitute the vial with sterile water for injection and administer as IV injection over ~5 minutes or further dilute and give as IV infusion over 15–30 minutes. Dose and duration depend on infection type, severity, kidney function and patient age; use exactly as prescribed, usually in a hospital setting.
Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, rash, injection site pain/phlebitis, fever, elevated liver enzymes, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia
Prescription-only hospital antibiotic; use only for proven/suspected bacterial infections to reduce resistance. Adjust dose in renal impairment; monitor kidney function and blood counts during prolonged therapy. Risk of hypersensitivity reactions (cross-reactivity possible in penicillin/cephalosporin allergy) and severe skin reactions; seek urgent care for rash, swelling or breathing difficulty. May cause seizures, especially with CNS disorders or renal dysfunction. Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhoea can occur; report persistent diarrhoea.
Valproic acid/sodium valproate (markedly reduces valproate levels; avoid), probenecid (increases meropenem levels), anticoagulants such as warfarin (may increase INR; monitor), other nephrotoxic drugs (use with caution)
Store unopened vial below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution/dilution, use immediately; if storage is necessary, follow hospital guidelines and product label for stability; do not freeze prepared solutions unless label allows.
