Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure); may be used in patients requiring combination therapy to control BP and reduce cardiovascular risk.
Metoprolol is a beta-1 selective beta blocker that slows heart rate and reduces the force of contraction, lowering blood pressure. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels by inhibiting calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle, improving blood flow and reducing BP.
Tablet for oral use. Take exactly as prescribed, preferably at the same time each day. Swallow whole with water; do not crush/chew (extended-release). Can be taken with or without food. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice.
Dizziness, fatigue, headache, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, ankle/feet swelling (edema), flushing, palpitations, nausea, constipation
Prescription medicine. Do not stop metoprolol suddenly (risk of chest pain/heart attack in susceptible patients). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may worsen breathing), diabetes (may mask low-sugar symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, and in patients with slow heart rate/heart block or heart failure unless supervised. Monitor BP and pulse. Amlodipine may cause ankle swelling and dizziness. Caution while driving if dizzy. Inform doctor before surgery/anesthesia.
Other antihypertensives (additive BP lowering), verapamil/diltiazem/digoxin/antiarrhythmics (risk of bradycardia/heart block), clonidine (rebound hypertension on withdrawal), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), CYP3A4 inhibitors like clarithromycin/azoles/grapefruit (increase amlodipine levels), CYP3A4 inducers like rifampicin/phenytoin/carbamazepine (reduce amlodipine effect), alcohol (increases dizziness/hypotension)
