Metoprolol succinate extended-release 12.5 mg (per tablet)
Hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain), chronic stable heart failure (as adjunct therapy), rate control in certain tachyarrhythmias; may be used for secondary prevention after myocardial infarction as per physician advice
Metoprolol is a cardioselective beta-1 adrenergic blocker. It reduces heart rate and contractility, lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand. The XR formulation releases medicine slowly to provide 24-hour control.
Take by mouth once daily at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole; do not crush/chew/split unless advised. Dose is individualized; do not stop suddenly without medical supervision.
Tiredness, dizziness, slow heart rate (bradycardia), low blood pressure, headache, nausea, cold hands/feet, sleep disturbances
Do not stop abruptly (may worsen angina/trigger heart attack). Use with caution in asthma/COPD (may cause bronchospasm), diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, liver impairment, and in patients with low heart rate/heart block. Contraindicated in severe bradycardia, second/third-degree AV block, cardiogenic shock, and acute decompensated heart failure unless directed by a specialist. Monitor pulse and blood pressure regularly.
Other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), calcium channel blockers like verapamil/diltiazem (risk of bradycardia/heart block), antiarrhythmics (e.g., amiodarone), digoxin, clonidine (rebound hypertension if stopped improperly), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), CYP2D6 inhibitors such as fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (may increase metoprolol levels), insulin/oral antidiabetics (masked hypoglycaemia)
Store at room temperature (below 25°C), protected from moisture and light. Keep in original blister pack and out of reach of children.
