Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), rate control in tachyarrhythmias (as advised), and as adjunct therapy in chronic heart failure where appropriate.

Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker. It reduces heart rate and the force of contraction, thereby lowering blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand.

Tablet (typically extended-release): take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time, preferably with or immediately after food. Swallow whole; do not crush or chew extended-release tablets. Do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Use with caution in asthma/COPD, diabetes (may mask hypoglycaemia symptoms), thyroid disorders, peripheral vascular disease, and in patients with bradycardia, heart block, or decompensated heart failure. Do not discontinue abruptly (risk of rebound hypertension/angina). Monitor pulse and blood pressure. Seek urgent care for wheeze, severe dizziness/fainting, very slow pulse, or worsening shortness of breath/swelling.

Other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), calcium channel blockers like verapamil/diltiazem (bradycardia/heart block), antiarrhythmics (e.g., amiodarone), digoxin, clonidine (rebound risk on withdrawal), NSAIDs (may reduce antihypertensive effect), insulin/oral antidiabetics (mask hypoglycaemia), CYP2D6 inhibitors such as fluoxetine/paroxetine/quinidine (increase metoprolol levels).

Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep in original strip and out of reach of children.
