Monograph
Tablet
Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure), especially when single-drug therapy is not adequate; helps reduce risk of cardiovascular events associated with uncontrolled BP (as per physician advice).
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels by blocking AT1 receptors, lowering blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic that increases salt and water excretion through urine, reducing blood volume and blood pressure. Together they provide additive BP-lowering effect.
Oral tablet. Take exactly as prescribed, usually once daily at the same time each day. Can be taken with or without food; swallow with water. Maintain adequate hydration; do not stop suddenly without medical advice.
Dizziness, headache, fatigue, increased urination, low blood pressure, nausea, increased blood uric acid, low potassium, low sodium, muscle cramps
Prescription medicine. Monitor blood pressure, kidney function (serum creatinine), and electrolytes (potassium, sodium). May cause dizziness—avoid driving until you know its effect. Use with caution in kidney or liver disease, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, gout, and diabetes. Risk of hypotension in volume-depleted patients. Not recommended in pregnancy (especially 2nd/3rd trimester) due to fetal toxicity with ARBs. Seek help for facial/lip swelling (angioedema), severe dehydration, or reduced urine output.
Potassium supplements/potassium-sparing diuretics (risk of hyperkalemia), NSAIDs (reduced effect and kidney risk), lithium (toxicity risk), other antihypertensives (additive hypotension), corticosteroids/amphotericin B (electrolyte loss), antidiabetic medicines (may need dose adjustment), alcohol (increased dizziness), digoxin (telmisartan may increase levels in some cases)
